What can't Safe Sip+ Drink Test Sticker tell you?
Safe Sip+ checks for three drugs only. A negative result means none of those three were detected. It doesn't mean your drink is safe. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Alcohol: extra alcohol in a drink is the most common form of spiking.
- Other drugs: for example other benzodiazepines, amphetamines or prescription medicines.
Safe Sip+ is for testing drinks only. It is for personal use and isn't a medical test. A positive result should never be the only proof that a drug is present. A positive result is not to be used as the sole basis for determining the presence of illegal drugs.
What should I do if I think my drink was spiked?
- Stop drinking it. Keep the drink if you can, and tell a friend or venue staff. Discard any suspected spiked beverages immediately.
- Stay with someone you trust. Don't leave alone, don't drive and don't go with people you don't know.
- Call your local emergency number straight away if you or a friend feel very unwell, can't stay awake, have trouble breathing or become unconscious.
- Contact the police as soon as you can. Some drugs leave the body quickly, so testing early gives the best chance of detecting them.
- Get support. Help is there whether or not you report to police.
It's never your fault if your drink is spiked. Drink spiking is a
crime in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US and Canada.
How can I lower the risk on a night out?
- Buy your own drinks and watch them being made.
- Don't accept drinks from people you don't know, and don't drink anyone else's.
- Never leave your drink unattended. Ask a trusted friend to watch it if you need to leave.
- Plan with friends how you'll look out for each other and get home.
- Keep a Safe Sip+ Drink Test Sticker on your phone so you can test a drink you're unsure about.
